Sustainability

Sustainability is very important to us.We have had the Green Key Gold label since 2014, the highest attainable mark within the global tourism and leisure industry.

Hotel de Walvisvaarder has:

* A Bio-digester for organic kitchen waste (the tenth company in the Netherlands)* 100% Green Electricity via Terschelling Energie* Our gas consumption is 100% compensated* A sustainable personnel policy* Charging points for electric cars* Solar energy charging points for electric bicycles* Social involvement* Fair trade is not a question but a given

* A sustainable main building with a heat pump, solar boilers and solar panels

* Our own biodynamic flower and herb garden at the back of our yard from which we get our flowers and honey

* And will get a Bio-digester in November 2022, kitchen waste will be converted into biogas and compost

Furthermore, we comply with all guidelines required by Green Key such as use of ecological cleaning agents, reducing water use, refillable soap/shampoo dispencers, reducing waste, no minibars in hotel rooms, organic and Fairtrade products, local sourcing, sustainable printing, toilet paper, printing and linen.

Towards 2030, we aim to reduce the use of fossil fuels every year with the goal of being climate-neutral (using offsets) by 2027. With our new Bio-digester, we are able to generate 4,000 m3 biogas annually.
